The palazzata in the Sicilian city of Messina was an imposing, uniform line of a 1.5 km long palace facade on the harbor promenade, which was partially hidden in front of the town hall behind it , the silk factories and the trading and banking houses. She connected them with it and gave them a uniform palatial facade facing the sea.

The palazzata

The Palazzata was also called Teatro Marittimo ("the sea spectacle"). Even Marco Antonio Colonna (* 1535, † 1 August 1584), which as a Spanish viceroy of Sicily managed, thought in 1579 from the strada del porto to embellish ( "promenade") that bore his name: strada Colonna . This strada Colonna was a 1.5 km long harbor promenade that enclosed the harbor in a gentle curve like that of a sickle.

The 1st Palazzata (1622-1625)

Under Emanuele Filiberto (April 16, 1588; † August 4, 1624), 3rd son of Carlo Emanuele I of Savoy and Duke of Sicily, Simone Gullì, architect from Messina, was commissioned in 1622 to create a larger series of uniforms Build palazzi around via Emanuella . The via Emanuella was the street at the harbor of Messina, which Emanuele Filiberto was in honor called. The palazzi were connected to each other by triumphal arches, thus reflecting the image of a continuous common palace.

Gullì is documented in Messina since 1622 and had an education in Rome behind him. From the engravings and paintings on the palazzata it is clear that Gullì continued the monumental style of Roman architecture of the 16th century. Gullì was also the builder in charge of two central churches, San Michele and Santa Maria della Grotta.

The 2nd Palazzata (1808)

Badly damaged by the 1783 earthquake, the Palazzata was rebuilt in 1808, this time in the classical style by Giacomo Minutolì.

The 3rd Palazzata (1929-1940)

The Messina earthquake in 1908 also destroyed the 2 palazzata. In 1929 there was a new artistic competition for the reconstruction of the Palazzata, which the architects Autore, Samonà, Viola and Leone won with their design. The “Palazzo dell'Ina” was designed by Viola and Samonà (1935). The architect Autore (1936) also designed the “Banco di Sicilia” building. Between 1938 and 1940, the former "Palazzo Littorio" and the "Palazzo dell'Inail" were built based on the design by Viola and Samonà.
