Palazzo Morosini Gatterburg , also Palazzo Morosini a Santo Stefano , is a palace in Venice in the Italian region of Veneto . It is located in the Sestiere San Marco on Campo Santo Stefano opposite the Palazzo Loredan . Its back faces the Rio del Santissimo .

history

The palace was bought by the Morosini family in 1628. Francesco Morosini , who was called “The Peloponnesian” because of his victories against the Ottomans in “Morea” (as part of Greece was called by the Venetians) and was Doge from 1688 to 1694 , had the palace originally renovated . In the 19th century it was still owned by a descendant of the family, Lauredana Morosini Gatterburg , but in 1884 many of the properties were sold and more came into the possession of the Museo Correr . The wood paneling and furniture in one of the rooms can now be seen in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston .

In the palace there are still original stucco decorations and frescoes of mythological themes in the former exhibition hall of the stolen works of art from “Morea”. There are also frescoes there that were made for the wedding of Francesco Morosini to Paulina Mocenigo in 1688. Today the palace belongs to the Assicurazioni Generali and serves as an exhibition space for their collections.

In 1802, bullfights took place in the square in front of the palace . There used to be portraits of eight doges from the Morosini family, as well as of Tomasina Morosini (c. 1250–1300), Queen of Hungary and Costanza Morosini , Queen of Croatia .
