The Archbishop's Palace ( Palazzo Arcivescovile ) in Udine , called Palazzo Patriarcale after its origins , is particularly known for the frescoes by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo . Since 1995 it has housed the Diocesan Museum with the Tiepolo Galleries ( Museo diocesano e gallerie del Tiepolo ). The core of the building dates back to the 16th century, when the Patriarchs of Aquileia moved from the castle to the city. Under Patriarch Dionisio Delfino , additions and alterations were made from 1708 by the architect Domenico Rossi , most recently in 1725 the building of the staircase of honor with the ceiling fresco of the Fall of Hell , surrounded by images of the creation of man and the fall of man in grisaille technique by Tiepolo (1726).

The Diocesan Museum was founded in 1963 by Archbishop Giuseppe Zaffonato and was initially housed in the Archbishop's Seminary. The collection of Friulian wooden sculptures from the 12th to 18th centuries can be seen in the six rooms on the first floor.

On the 2nd floor there is the library with around 12,000 volumes (medieval manuscripts, some with miniatures , including the manuscript of Castelmonte , incunabula , rare first editions from the 16th century). The victory of wisdom can be seen on the ceiling painting by Niccolò Bambini , which was painted on canvas . Wisdom is depicted as an armored warrior enthroned in the clouds, holding a closed book with seven seals.

The library leads to the Blue or Baldachinsaal. The Renaissance frescoes (1558–1560, Giovanni da Udine ) on its canopy-like vaulted ceiling depict scenes from the New Testament . On the second floor are the throne room and the chapel, the altarpiece of which shows a Madonna and Child by Jacopo Palma the Younger . The judgment of Solomon ( GB Tiepolo , 1729) is depicted in the ceiling fresco of the courtroom . The cycle of frescoes with biblical scenes by Tiepolo in the Galleria is dominated by the depiction: Rachel hides the household gods from her father Laban (1727).
