Castelmonte manuscript

The Castelmonte manuscript (Slovenian: Starogorski rokopis ) is a late medieval Slovenian manuscript . It largely coincides with the much older Klagenfurt manuscript .

history

Archbishop's Library in the Palazzo Patriarcale

The manuscript was written in Mirnik by the local vicar named Lauretius around 1450–1520, according to a closer estimate by Jože Toporišič between 1492 and 1498. It was rediscovered in the 20th century in the holdings of the monastery and pilgrimage site of Castelmonte in today's Friuli . Today it is kept in the archives of the Udines Archdiocese .

content

The one-sided manuscript contains the Our Father , the Ave Maria and the creed in almost identical form as the Klagenfurt manuscript.

Linguistic particularities

For the linguistic classification cf. Klagenfurt manuscript # history . The manuscript is in Gothic Fraktur . What is striking is the representation of modern j ( semi-vocal in Slovenian ) by y , while modern i is represented by j . The representation of the sibilants is based on German and is inconsistent.

meaning

The beginning of the written Slovene language is set with the Reformation. Medieval Slovene language certificates are rare and therefore each valuable in itself. The extensive identity with the Klagenfurt manuscript, which is considerably distant in terms of time and space, suggests that these central Christian prayers were largely canonized in the Slovenian-speaking area in the late Middle Ages.
