Palazzo Soranzo-van Axel is a palace in Venice in the Veneto region of Italy . It is located in the Cannaregio sestiere at the confluence of the Rio Ca 'Widmann with the Rio de la Panada next to the church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli .

history

Nicolò Soranzo had the palace built between 1473 and 1479 using building materials taken from an old palace of the Gradenigos . The particular appearance of the neighboring church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli, which was built at the same time, makes it likely that Niccolò Soranzo was also involved in the construction of this church. The palace later fell to the Veniers and the Sanudos and finally in 1652 to the Van Axels , wealthy merchants who came from the Netherlands , more precisely from Axel near Ghent , and who were accepted into the Venetian patriciate in 1665.

description

The side facade to the Rio Ca 'Widmann

The palace shows a late Gothic characteristic and has two inner courtyards with external stairs and two main floors. The L-shaped reception salons ( Porteghi ) are particularly peculiar due to the double facade at the confluence of the two canals. Note the large entrance portal at the Fondamenta de le Erbe , originally in wood with a bezel and the Van Axels coat of arms. Also noteworthy is the part of the building that closes the complex to the south, only a few meters wide: it was certainly built after the other parts of the palace and rises above a detachment originally decided by the Court of the Serenissima because of a property dispute with the neighboring one Nunnery was imposed.
