Palazzo Gradenigo a San Simeone Profeta is a palace in Venice in the Veneto region of Italy . It is located in the Santa Croce sestiere with a view of the Rio Marin next to the Palazzo Soranzo Cappello and opposite the Church of San Simeone Profeta .

history

The building was designed by the architect Domenico Margutti , a student of Baldassare Longhena , at the end of the 17th century as a magnificent home for the Gradenigo family , one of the most famous patrician families in Venice. Over the centuries of its prime, the palace saw grandiose festivals held in the gardens of the Gradenigos.

At the beginning of the 20th century, these gardens were the inspiration for some of the locations in the novel The Fire by Gabriele D'Annunzio .

Today the palace is in good condition after a restoration in 1999 and only partially belongs to the Gradenigo family.

description

The facade has three full floors and a mezzanine floor under the roof with small, square windows. There are two portals to the water on the ground floor.

The two main floors are asymmetrical; the first floor has ten single windows with balusters , the second wider window with round arches with mascarons above. Under the windows of the second floor, on the far left, a quadruple window stands out, which corresponds to a triple window on the garden facade.

The garden in particular made the palace particularly desirable. Up to the beginning of the 20th century it was one of the greatest treasures of the Gradenigos, one of the most opulent in the lagoon city and gigantic. However, very little of it remained after other buildings were erected in the area.

Inside, much of the original pictorial decorations have been redesigned. It remained stucco from the 17th century and some frescoes obtained Jacopo Guarana be attributed.
