history

Stone tablet in memory of Jean Jacques Rousseau on the facade of the palace

This palace, whose facade is one of the most important on the Canale di Cannaregio , was designed in the 17th century by the architect Giuseppi Sardi (1624–1699), who also built the neighboring Palazzo Savorgnan , for the Surian patrician family , who were of Armenian origin.

At the end of the same century, the palace fell to the Bellotto family, originally from Brescia . In the 18th century the Venetian seat of the French embassy was housed there. This was the time when the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau lived.

After the fall of the Republic of Venice in the 19th century, the palace began a long period of decline, during which the splendid, original structure and furnishings of the interiors were irretrievably lost.

Today the Palazzo Surian Bellotto is a private residence.

description

Detail of the facade with mascarons and balusters

The best-preserved and most important part of the Palazzo Surian Bellotto is the magnificent, baroque facade, which rises with its four floors above the neighboring, smaller palaces.

The facade is asymmetrical; its central axis is shifted to the left: it is located where the most valuable openings are to be found: on the ground floor, two portals decorated with mascarons in raised work , with which two pairs of Venetian windows correspond on the main floor . The ones on the second floor are partly boarded up. The other windows are large single windows with stone frames, richly decorated with the motifs from the Venetian windows. All the window openings on the main floor have mascarons and balusters . The third floor has small rectangular windows.

The storeys of the facade are separated by beautiful cornices , while the upper edge of the building is decorated with a serrated eaves .
