Palazzo Zorzi Galeoni
Palazzo Zorzi Galeoni , also Palazzo Zorzi or Palazzo Zorzi a San Severo , is a palace in Venice in the Italian region of Veneto . It is located in the Sestiere Castello with a view of the Rio di San Severo next to the Palazzo Zorzi Bon towards the Salizada Zorzi and the Ponte di San Severo .
history
Marco Zorzi , who was nicknamed “Pinza d'Oro” (German: “Gold Tongs”) because of his luck and his business skills, left the palace at the end of the 15th century on a site owned by the brothers Giovanni and Francesco Zorzi had acquired at the end of the 14th century. The work by Jacopo de 'Barbari from 1500 shows the new palace still under construction, but it is thought that Mauro Codussi , et al. a. the architect of the adjacent church of Santa Maria Formosa , was commissioned with the project soon after 1480, considering that he died in 1504. In 1581 Francesco Sansovino described "the palace of the Giorgia family , covered with white marble".
In 1997 the city of Venice bought the palace and after five years of restoration, during which all traces of the old decoration of the interiors disappeared, it is in poor condition after years of neglect, a regional seat of UNESCO . These rooms housed the Associazione dei Comitati Privati per la Salvaguardia di Venezia until 2015, which was headed by Alvise Zorzi , descendant of the family that had the palace built, for 26 years .
description
In addition to the older Gothic Palazzo Zorzi Bon, the facade is characterized by the gleaming white cladding with Istrian limestone and shows clear lines of the Renaissance . This is particularly evident from the angular floor plan, which - unusual in Venice - led to the construction of a portego (reception salon).
In addition to an inner courtyard with a fountain, the palace used to have a large wing along the lane, which today is almost completely occupied by the restaurant "Al Giardinetto da Severino", which has an old fireplace with a large Zorzis coat of arms in one of its rooms. The aforementioned inner courtyard, which today belongs to the restaurant and in which there used to be a boccia club, was originally the palace's large garden, which was accessed from a balcony adjacent to the portego .
