The Palazzo dei Banchi (Palace of the banks) is a building in Bologna from the 15th and 16th centuries .

Located on the Piazza Maggiore to the side of the Basilica of San Petronio , its name goes back to the banks and exchange offices that operated here in the 15th and 16th centuries.

The palace was built in 1412, but the additions to the facade and arcade date from 1565 to 1568 and were carried out by the then famous architect Jacopo Barozzi , otherwise known as Vignola . From here extends the most famous arcade, the Pavaglione , which connects Piazza Maggiore with the Palazzo dell'Archiginnasio , the oldest seat of the University of Bologna .

The use of this building scheme enables, among other things, the unique feature of the city that the street crossings are covered by vaulted halls and arcades , which has always been one of the landmarks of Bologna .

The expression Pavaglione goes back to the stalls of the silk weavers who had been trading in front of the Palazzo dell'Archiginnasio in today's Piazza Galvani since 1449 . This open market was under a tent that sounds like pavajàn in Emilian (probably a loan word from the French pavillon - hall or tent).

For a long time the Pavaglione was considered the passeggio bene of the city, the meeting point of the noble people of Bologna.
