The nine-storey building was designed in 1935 by the architects Enrico Del Debbio , Arnaldo Foschini and V. Ballio Morpurgo as the headquarters of the Partito Nazionale Fascista , the Italian fascist party, as Palazzo del Littorio . Construction began before the Second World War , but was not completed until 1956. The monumental building is located in the immediate vicinity of the Foro Italico (formerly Foro Mussolini ) between Monte Mario and the Tiber .

The exterior architecture of the Palazzo, clad with Roman travertine from Tivoli , is not committed to the Razionalismo Giuseppe Terragnis , but with its 169-meter-long, strictly paratactically structured perforated facade, satisfies the widespread stereotype of fascist ruling architecture. With more than 1300 rooms, it is one of the largest buildings in Italy.

In 1959, the Palazzo della Farnesina became the seat of the Italian Foreign Ministry . For this reason, the term “Farnesina” is now used to refer to the Ministry itself, referring to the location of the building that used to belong to the Farnese .
