Pelden Lhamo (also: Pälden Lhamo or Palden Lhamo ; Sanskrit : Shri Devi , Tibetan : dpal ldan lha mo ) is a Tibetan goddess. She is considered to be the protector of the Buddha's teachings . She has appeared in the pantheon of Tibetan Buddhism since at least the 11th century , where she can mainly be seen in portraits together with Mahakala or Yama Dharmaraja . However, it is of older origin and is also venerated in the Bon . The first Dalai Lama Gendun Drubreceived teachings on Pelden Lhamo from Bodong Chogle Namgyel. Since the time of the 2nd Dalai Lama and especially since the 5th Dalai Lama , she has been their personal patron deity. As such, it has a special status, especially in the Gelug School, but is also venerated in other schools of Tibetan Buddhism. In addition, she is considered the patron deity of the city of Lhasa and the Tibetan government. It is said to reveal itself especially at the holy lake Lhamo Lhatso , approx. 145 km southeast of Lhasa. In this lake, mirror images of the future should also be revealed. In 1509 the 2nd Dalai Lama founded the Chökhorgyel monastery there . After its introduction to Tibet , Pelden Lhamo may have ousted older female deities of Bon . According to legends and iconography, she is associated with Tara and Sarasvati . Her images also appear in Mongolia and China . It appears almost exclusively frightening and horrific on the thangkas .
