Palio Pyli

Palio Pyli ( Greek Παλιό Πύλι ( n. Sg. )) Is an abandoned village with a castle in the municipality Dikeos on the Greek Dodecanese -Insel Kos . The ruins are located on the northern slope of the island mountains and offer very good views of the places Marmari (Kos) , Tigaki , the salt lake Alykes and the sea.

history

The castle was probably built in the 11th century. In the 15th century the Pelets moved into the castle and founded the village below it. It could not be seen from the sea and was therefore well protected against attacks by pirates. In 1830 the castle and the village were abandoned due to a cholera epidemic and moved mostly to Pyli (also called Neu-Pyli).

investment

Between ruined for the most part houses built in the 11th century, two churches, church Asomati Taxiárches Gavriil ke Miachaíl and the St. Mary's Church of Panagia ton Kastrianón obtained.
