The Palindrome Buttress (English for Palindrome Pillar ) is a prominent and 905 m high rock spur on the West Antarctic Alexander I Island . It marks the southern end of the northern group of the Walton Mountains .
The US polar explorer Lincoln Ellsworth was awarded the first sighting during an overflight on November 23, 1935. The resulting aerial photographs were used by the US cartographer WLG Joerg for mapping. The British geographer Derek Searle from the Falkland Island Dependencies Survey refined this mapping in 1960 using aerial photographs taken by the American Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947-1948). The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named the formation in 1961 because it can be seen from a distance from any direction.
