Palmotić ( Italian Palmotta ) was a Croatian noble family from the Republic of Dubrovnik . The members of the noble family were politicians , diplomats or well-known writers , and some of them were elected knez (prince or rector, i.e. head of state of the republic).
historical overview
The ancestors of the family most likely come from the area of the medieval principality of Zahumlje . The family was first mentioned in a historical document from 1222. According to some sources, she was even present in Dubrovnik in 1157 . In a two-hundred-year period (1440-1640) a total of 46 members of the family were appointed to the Grand Council of the Republic ( Consilium Maior ), 67 to the Senate ( Consilium Rogatorum ), 34 to the Minor Council ( Consilium Minor ) and 42 to the Knez, i.e. head of state , chosen.
As first-class and experienced diplomats, the members of the family were active in many European and non-European countries for several centuries and made acquaintances and sometimes friendships with various kings, emperors or sultans. Dživo (Ivan) Palmotić had the honor of bringing the festive ceremonial sword, a gift from the Croatian-Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus to the Knez, personally to Dubrovnik in 1466 and handing it over to the Knez. Since then a sword has been part of the family coat of arms .
With the extinction of many aristocratic families in Dubrovnik, the Palmotić line also ended at the beginning of the 18th century. The last member was Jelena Palmotić, who died in 1709.
