Palstrup

Palstrup is an estate three kilometers south of Rødkærsbro and 16 kilometers southeast of Viborg in the municipality of Viborg Amt , now Viborg Kommune ( Central Jutland region ). The estate covers an area of 456  hectares of land, of which 200 hectares are arable land, 223 hectares of forest, 20 hectares of meadows and 13 hectares of park.

History and change of ownership

Palstrup was originally a barn yard of the Tvilum monastery in the 14th century. Then the property belonged to Las Braad and later in 1574 to Frans Dyre. Their grandchildren sold it to Ove Juul, who passed the property on to the later noble Rittmeister Joachim Gersdorff. The large rampart with the double moat was created by Oluf Parsberg in the period around 1640–1661.

In 1663 the king transferred ownership to Corfitz Ulfeld, who quickly sold Palstrup to Mogen Friis. In 1672 Otte Pogwisch sold the estate to Amtsman Peder Charius, the son-in-law of Baron Marselis zu Marselisborg, who transferred it to the pharmacist Daniel Friedenreich in 1697. This was followed by a long series of changes of ownership. In the years 1780–1871 alone, Palstup was sold eleven times. In 1871, court hunter J. Ræder took over the Palstrup estate. He kept Palstrup until 1906 and sold it to the doctor VE Schejerup for 202,500 crowns. In 1918 the wholesaler Chr. J. Kampmann bought Palstrup for 600,000 kroner, who commissioned his brother, the architect Hack Kampmann , to carry out an extensive renovation and modernization in 1919. Two side wings that had been demolished in the 18th century were added again. The thatched roof of the warehouse from 1784 and the stone bridge over the inner moat from 1656 were reconstructed. After Chr. J. Kampmann's death in 1937, the estate was transferred to his son. Ole Philipsen has been the owner since 2001.

Mansion

The present mansion is a listed building and was built for Major Janus Friedenreich between 1722 and 1736 by the architects Johan G. Hödrich and Nicolaus Hinrich Rieman in the middle of a large rampart with two walls made of red bricks with two floors and a saddle roof . The manor is surrounded by moats spanned by bridges. There are also five sandstone lion statues from 1656, which are also placed on the bridge over the moat and are decorated with the coat of arms of the first builder, Reichsrat Oluf Parsberg.

HC Andersen's stay on Palstrup

In 1859, the great Danish poet Hans Christian Andersen stayed in Viborg in Asmild Monastery from September 2nd to 6th . On September 6th he traveled to Palstrup and lived there until September 8th, when he went on to Silkeborg .

Excerpt from HC Andersen's diary from Thursday, September 7th, 1859: cold weather, the housekeeper's children cry at night, the meal bells ring early in the morning, people come in wooden shoes, a lot of noise, at half past three they drove over to Provost Bendixen, who had studied with me, his wife's sister is the tenant on Børglum, at lunchtime Mrs. Sporon and von Brachel were very cordial, I read; at 9 o'clock Hjalmar drove home to the damp Palstrup; where Mogens Munk had lived.

(in the Danish original: Koldt Veir; inat græd Huusholderskens Barn, tidlig paa Morgenen lød Madklokken, Folkene kom i Træskoene, stor Støien. )
