Panagia ( Greek Παναγία ( f. Sg. ) = Mother of God ) is the name of a Cretan mountain village with a small church of the same name. He belongs to the local community Kavousi in the municipality of Ierapetra in Eastern Crete. The place had seven inhabitants in 2001, in 2011 it was registered as uninhabited.

location

The place is located 2.5 km east of Kavousi at an altitude of 420 m in the high valley Avgo ( Αύγο ). The village of Melisses is 250 meters south .

Excavations

For a long time it has been assumed that there was an ancient watchtower near the church of Panagia (Mary's Birth), which secured the way from Kavousi to Chrysopigi (also called Roukaka). On July 19, 1901, the archaeologists Harriet Boyd and Blanche Emily Wheeler excavated here and discovered a dwelling from the Mycenaean period fortified with Cyclopean walls . Due to the construction of the church and its use as a Christian cemetery, the finds were sparse or broken. So simple Mycenaean ceramics, some bronze objects and a gem made of hematite came to light. 100 m east in a vineyard on the slope of the mountain Bembonas (also Beponas) further bronze objects were excavated.
