The Panagia Angeloktisti ( Greek Παναγίας της Αγγελόκτιστης Panagia tis Angeloktistis , also Panagia Aggeloktisti ) is an Orthodox church building in the village of Kiti , which is 11 km south of Larnaka on Cyprus . The Byzantine church is famous for its apse mosaic from the 6th century . The church has been on the list of proposals for inclusion in UNESCO World Heritage since 2015 .

history

The Byzantine Panagia Angeloktisti was built in the 11th century as a cross-domed church . The preserved apse of an early Christian basilica from the 5th century was included in the construction, in which there is the Marian mosaic from the 6th century, which shows Saint Mary as Hodegetria . This basilica was destroyed around 800 during the Arab invasion of Cyprus.

Around 1400 a Gothic side chapel was added to the church at the time of the Frankish crusader rule of the House of Lusignan in Cyprus , in order to be able to serve the Latin rite for the worship of the ruling upper class. The coat of arms of the Franconian Gibelet family can still be found above the entrance. Today the chapel serves as the vestibule of the church.
