The Pandeidae are a marine family of the Hydrozoa (Hydrozoa). The family currently includes around 75 species. The genus Hydrichthys also contains species that parasitize on the heads of fish.

features

The hydroid polyps are usually stolonal and rarely branched. A perisarc can be developed to a certain extent or it can be absent. Occasionally it forms a pseudohydrotheque. The tentacles of the hydrant are filiform, which are usually arranged in a wreath, exceptionally in two or more wreaths. But they can also be evenly distributed or even absent. Reproduction occurs asexually by budding and sexually mainly via medusa . The umbrella is tall, bell-shaped with or without an apical extension. The manubrium is roughly square and usually relatively large. There may be a gastral stalk. The manubrium has four simple, serrated or complexly folded lips. There are four, exceptionally eight radial channels, which are often wide and band-like. Mesenteries are present or may be absent. The gonads sit on the manubrium in an interradial position, sometimes they also extend along the radial canals. But they can also be completely in a perradial position. They can be smooth or complexly folded. There are two or more hollow edge tentacles. The tubers are usually conical or elongated, with or without rudimentary tentacles. Ocelli can be present or absent. The cnidome consists of microbasic euryteles.

Geographical occurrence

The representatives of the family are common in all seas worldwide.

Systematics

The Hydrozoa Directory provides 23 genera to the family. Two other genera have already been identified by Boero et al. (1991) placed as a family.
