Paninaro

A Paninaro (plural: Paninari ) was a supporter of a subculture in Milan in the 1980s . The name goes back to their meeting point, the Milanese fast food restaurant Al panino . Paninari were considered completely apolitical (which was a sharp contrast to the ideals of the 1970s ), very consumer-oriented to hedonistic , and were interested in fashion, music and all trends from the USA.

Many of the followers were pupils in private schools in Milan - accordingly the “Paninaro slang” is ultimately based on the Milanese youth language of the 1980s.

Models and accessories

The Paninari were the first Italian subculture to define itself primarily through television - the Italian broadcaster Videomusic was the first European music broadcaster. Accordingly, their role models were mainly bands that stood out for their elaborate and visually garish music videos such as Duran Duran , Spandau Ballet , Wham! , Simple Minds , Frankie Goes to Hollywood , Boy George and the Pet Shop Boys . On the other hand, they rejected music in Italian.

The brand awareness of the followers was also characteristic. Typical were jeans ( Levi's , Stone Island or Armani ), checked shirts ( Naj Oleari ), leather belts ( El Charro ), checked socks ( Burlington ), cowboy boots ( Frye or Durango ), down jackets ( Moncler ) or denim jackets. Motorcycles of the Zündapp 175 type and enduro machines were also popular.

In other European countries such as France and partly England there were similar fashion developments in the early eighties. In Germany, the Poppers , who are quite similar in background and habitus to the Paninari, aroused considerable media interest at the time.

Pet Shop Boys

The expression Paninaro became known through the song of the same name by the Pet Shop Boys, first published in Italy in 1986; In its text, terms are listed that are associated with the Paninari:
