Stone Island is an Italian men's fashion brand in the upper price segment with its own retail stores .

The brand was launched in 1982 by the Italian designer Massimo Osti (born June 17, 1944 in Baricella , † June 6, 2005 in Bologna) as a second line alongside his main CP Company collection. Osti founded CP Company SpA in Ravarino in 1974 , which eventually included the CP Company , Stone Island and Boneville brands (discontinued in 1995). Stone Island became known as a pioneer in special dyeing techniques and unique, unconventional surface treatments. The brand was, for example, one of the first to use the stonewash effect in series. Stone Island has been completely owned by the Italian Rivetti family since 1993, which had already entered into a cooperation with Osti in 1983.

Company history

Stone Island

Stone Island jacket

The name Stone Island , originally proposed by Osti's wife Daniela as "isola di pietra" (Eng. ' Stone Island '), is supposed to symbolize the freedom of an island and the indestructibility of stone . Osti was inspired by Joseph Conrad 's novels when he came up with a name . Osti had launched the second line in order to be able to implement innovative fabric developments that were too progressive for its high-quality, simple main collection CP Company into a collection.

Innovations

New, partly futuristic-looking product developments Ostis from the 1980s, for which special industrial machines had to be created in some cases and which were often accompanied by patents , were, for example , cotton covered on one side with a (wafer-thin) rubber layer ( Stone Island Raso Ray Parka , 1983 ), Wool ( Stone Island Rubber Wool Parka , 1986) or flax fiber (Stone Island Rubber Flax Jacket, 1987) to create water-tightness , and a fabric material that changed color after being treated with quartz due to the action of heat ( Stone Island Ice Jacket , 1985 ), fabric material mixed with steel threads ( Stone Island Pure Metal Shell Jacket , 1988) and the processing of glass particles in the upper material ( Stone Island Reflective Jacket , 1989).

Ownership

In 1983 Osti sold CP Company, and with it Stone Island, 50% to the GFT Group, an Italian textile and licensed fashion manufacturer. Carlo Rivetti, the son of the GFT owner, was appointed managing director of CP Company SpA in 1989 . GFT took over CP Company completely in 1991. When the CP Company SpA was to be spun off from the GFT Group in 1993, Carlo Rivetti and his sister Cristina took over the company with their company Rivetex. Osti resigned as a designer in 1994, his last Stone Island collection was the summer 1995 season. Until 2008, the English designer Paul Harvey took over the design of the Stone Island collections in the Osti style. Since then, a design team headed by designer Gionata Malagodi, who was responsible for the label between 1994 and 1998 (initially together with Osti), has been responsible for the collections. At the beginning of 2010, Rivetti sold the CP Company label in order to be able to concentrate fully on the Stone Island brand and its expansion, especially in Germany.

Stone Island Compass Rose Badge

Stone Island is a men's brand and has also been offering a boys' collection ( Stone Island Junior ) since 2006 . Nevertheless, the brand also attracts female customers. Main recognition of Stone Iceland is the detachable compass - badge ., A rectangular fabric label with compass motif, for example in sweaters and jackets mounted on the upper sleeve with buttons is. The badges were originally outlined in green, but in the spring 2000 collection they were colored black as part of a design change. Some limited editions have a white bordered trademark. Stone Island also introduced a denim- based second line for men in 2001 under the name Stone Island Denims , which was discontinued with the fall / winter 2009 collection. This collection was priced a little lower and instead of the compass badges had an imprint with the words Stone Island Denims . In addition, the technologically avant-garde Stone Island Shadow Project collaboration with the ACRONYM design team has existed since 2008 .

British football fans

Stone Island was able to establish itself as a trendy casual brand, especially in Great Britain from the 1980s, among other things because of the high sales prices and the robust material . From the mid-1980s, followers of the hooligan scene began to stand out from classic fans as a status symbol with designer clothing from Armani , Aquascutum , Burberry and especially Stone Island . Therefore, the brand still has a certain association with British football hooligans, which has been reinforced by films such as The Football Factory (2004), Hooligans (2005) and The Firm (1988, remake 2009 ), in which Stone Island is prominently presented . The company itself benefits from the football fans with high sales figures in Great Britain. Stone Island even operated a "football blog " on its own website at times .

Business figures

Between 2009 and 2014, sales doubled from € 40 million to € 80 million. In 2017, € 147 million was already achieved. For 2018, the company reports € 192 million, which is another 30% growth compared to the previous year. For 2019, the company is planning a further increase of 20%. Managing Director Carlo Rivetti has not yet planned an IPO, even if the company's key figures would suggest it.
