Panoply (Greek πανοπλία) refers to a decorative composition of elements of ancient armor , shields, weapons and flags in Renaissance and Baroque art .

Originally the term referred to the equipment of a Greek hoplite . In ancient Rome , after a victory, the looted weapons were placed decoratively under the armor of the defeated commander. In the architecture of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, the panoplies carved in stone were used as elements of the decoration of the facades and interiors. The panoplies often appeared in coats of arms and military awards.
