The genus Pantala is one of the nine genera of the subfamily Pantalinae . It combines the two species Pantala flavescens and Pantala hymenaea . The genus was established in 1861 by Hagen . The scientific name Pantala means "all wings" and alludes to the large and long wings. Thanks to the migrant dragonfly, which loves to migrate, the distribution area extends roughly up to the 40th degree of latitude or to the 20 ° C isotherms .

The species of the Pantala are up to 4.5 cm long and reach wingspans between 7.2 cm and 8.4 cm. The front of the head is yellowish to reddish. The thorax is mostly yellowish / golden with a dark line and insistent. The color of the abdomen is similar to that of the thorax. The wings are not colored and are very broad at the base. The Pantala hymenaea also have a dark spot at the base of their wings.
