Pantala hymenaea is next to Pantala flavescens the second species of dragonfly of the genus Pantala from the subfamily Pantalinae . The distribution area extends from Canada to Argentina . They were first described in 1839 by Thomas Say , who at that time still called the species Libellula hymenea . The holotype , a female from Indiana , was lost.

Pantala hymenaea is up to five centimeters long and reaches wingspans between 7.2 centimeters and 8.4 centimeters. The front of the head is reddish in the male and has reddish-brown eyes. The female, however, has a yellow face. It also has a dark spot on the base of the wing, which is what gave it the name Spot-winged Glider. Otherwise the wings are transparent.
