The panther ant damper ( Dendroleon pantherinus ) is a reticulated wing from the family of ant maids (Myrmeleontidae). It is the only species of the genus in Europe.
features
The animals reach a forewing length of 26 to 30 millimeters. Their pairs of wings are conspicuously spotted. One can easily distinguish the species from other ant maids by its eye spot on the rear edge of the forewing.
Occurrence
The species is widespread in southern Central Europe, as far as Asia. The northern limit of distribution is in the Rhine-Main area . It rarely occurs everywhere in only small numbers of individuals. They can be found from the lowlands to locations around 500 meters above sea level.
Way of life
The nocturnal adults fly from July to August. The larvae camouflage themselves with detritus and do not build catch funnels. They live in dry and heat-favored deciduous forests, in the mulm of old trees.
