Pantilius tunicatus is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The bugs grow to be 8.0 to 10.2 millimeters long. The size, the conspicuous coloring and the antennae , which are shorter than the body, make the species unmistakable. The extent of the characteristic red pattern is variable and newly hatched adults can be almost completely green. The adults are fully winged (macropter).

Occurrence and habitat

The species is distributed from Scandinavia with the exception of the far north to the northern Mediterranean area and east to Siberia and northern China. In Germany and Austria, the species is widespread and common in places. It rises in the Alps to over 1500 meters above sea level.

Way of life

The bugs live on alder ( Alnus ) and hazel ( Corylus ), less often on birch ( Betula ) and other deciduous trees. They suckle on the immature reproductive organs of the plants and the young shoots. The adult bugs can fly, but do so very rarely. The overwintering takes place as an egg. Adult bugs do not appear until mid-August or even from September. Mating and laying eggs in fresh shoots takes place in September and October. Single females can still be found in November.
