Panvel is a city in the state of Maharashtra in western India . It is part of the Raigad district . Panvel is divided into 38 wards (constituencies) and is administered as the Municipal Council. The city is part of the Mumbai metropolitan area . It is 35 kilometers to Mumbai from Panvel .

history

Panvel (also known as Panwell by the British) is around 300 years old and was developed by the Marathas, British and Portuguese to open up trade routes (land and sea). Panvel was once famous for its rice market. The Panvel Municipal Council was founded in 1852 and is Maharashtra's oldest municipal council.

Demographics

The city's population is 180,020 according to the 2011 census. Panvel has a gender ratio of 946 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus typical for India. The literacy rate was 93.9% in 2011. Almost 78.6% of the population are Hindus , approx. 10.9% are Muslims , approx. 5.9% are Buddhists , approx. 2.1% are Christians , approx 1.3% are Jainas and about 1.1% belong to other or no religions. 10.3% of the population are children under six years of age.

economy

Due to its proximity to Mumbai, various industries have settled in the suburb. The Jawaharlal Nehru Port is in the immediate vicinity.

Infrastructure

Panvel is an important hub as this is where many major roads meet and run through the city. From here, the Mumbai-Pune, Sion-Panvel, National Highway 4B, and National Highway 66 highways depart, while National Highway 4 crosses the city. The city has its own railway station.
