Panyptila is a genus of birdsinthe sailor family (Apodidae). The two species of the genus, which differ greatly in size, are both native to the Neotropical fauna region, the great swallow-swift isrestrictedto Central America , while the little swallow-swift has a large Neotropical distribution.

features

The body length of the great swallow-swallow is between 18 and 20 centimeters, that of the small swallow-swift about 13 centimeters. Both species show remarkably similar spotty plumage. The figure looks very graceful with long, pointed wings. Both have clearly forked tails that are often kept closed. The body is slender and streamlined, although the head is quite large. The representatives of the genus can be easily distinguished from the other types of sailors in Latin America , the closest in shape and color are the Tachornis species, in contrast to these, the mottled coloration of the underside is much more contrasting and not so blurred, and the flight is not so unsteady and appears much more graceful.

Systematics

The genus is one of the least controversial types of sailors. It shows a close relationship to the genus Tachornis .
