The armored artillery battalion 45 of the Bundeswehr was stationed in the Zieten barracks in Göttingen until its dissolution on March 31, 1993 .
history
The 45 armored artillery battalion emerged from the 45 field artillery battalion, which was subordinated to the Armored Grenadier Brigade 4 on November 7, 1961. As part of the reorganization of Panzerbrigade 34 (later renamed Panzerbrigade 6 ), the field artillery battalion was divided and partially subordinated to this new brigade (a common practice for the formation of new units). The reorganization as a tank artillery battalion began on October 1, 1975 in Göttingen.
Since October 1, 1980 , the battalion had been divided into Army Structure 4 and had a staff and supply battery (1./45) and three "shooting batteries " (2., 3. and 4./45). These had to train recruits as operational and training batteries (I / O batteries) . They were each equipped with 6 M 109 G armored howitzers (caliber 155 mm, range 18.5 km).
In 1986 the 4th battery was disbanded as part of Artillery Structure 85 , its howitzers were assigned to the 2nd and 3rd batteries. Until 1993 the Panzerartilleriebataillon 45 took part in many exercises and maneuvers with other units of the Panzergrenadierbrigade 4 to which it was subordinate. Panzergrenadierbrigade 4, which was also stationed in Göttingen, included the Panzergrenadier Battalions 41, 42 (Kassel) and 43, the Panzer Battalion 44 and the Panzerjägerkompanie 40. In 1988, the M109G (short barrel) were replaced by the M109A3GA1 (long barreled) howitzers. As part of the dissolution of the Panzerartilleriebataillon 45, the self-propelled howitzers were handed over to the newly established Homeland Security Brigade 41 in East Germany in 1993. In 1994 Panzergrenadierbrigade 4 was also dissolved and the barracks area was sold to the city of Göttingen.
Today the former Zieten barracks in Göttingen has largely been converted into a housing estate. The vehicle hangars were completely demolished. The older barracks blocks are empty and await civil use.
