Complete tank memorial complex

The tank memorial in Rothenburg / OL in the Saxon district of Görlitz commemorates the capture of the place by the Soviet and Polish armies in April 1945.

The cultural monument is on the monument protection list of the State Office for Monument Preservation Saxony (as of April 15, 2014).

history

The construction of the tank memorial began on July 16, 1969 at a historically memorable place, because this is where the 52nd Soviet Army and the 2nd Polish Army fought over the Neisse in World War II on April 16, 1945 . This transition had supraregional significance for the later battle for Bautzen and the march of the 1st Ukrainian Front under Marshal Konew on Berlin .

Before they withdrew from Rothenburg / OL, the Wehrmacht destroyed all Rothenburg Neisse bridges in April 1945 . The 2nd Polish Army formed a bridgehead several times during the crossing of the Neisse. The city was badly damaged by the fighting that followed.

Tank memorial

The memorial is located on the outskirts of Rothenburg / OL. A T-34 tank stands on a base made of granite stones . A wall made of the same material surrounds the tank in a semicircle. The wall is about a meter high behind the tank, and about two meters high at the ends, each of which has a base on which wreaths or bowls of flames used to be. On the sloping terrain behind the wall surrounding the tank there is a small wood, which is followed by an undeveloped green area that stretches to today's border river Lausitzer Neisse . There is a meadow in front of the tank, which is visually delimited by a hedge towards the adjacent state road 127 . There are deciduous trees to the right and left of the tank, which now double over the combat vehicle.

On the base there are three metal plates with identical inscriptions in Russian, German and Polish:
