Claude Germon (born May 2, 1934 in Le Grand-Quevilly , Département Seine-Inférieure ) is a French politician of the Socialist Party . From 1974 to 1995 he was mayor of Massy (Essonne) , from 1981 to 1993 a member of the French National Assembly .

Live and act

Claude Germon was a winemaker , later a tax inspector ( inspecteur des impôts ) and a trade unionist for the CGT . In 1966 he met the future President François Mitterrand . In 1974 Germon became mayor of the city of Massy in the Essonne department .

In the 1981 parliamentary elections Germon succeeded in entering the National Assembly , in which he represented the Essonne department for three legislative terms until 1993 in the socialist parliamentary group.

As Mayor of Massy, he successfully campaigned for a TGV Atlantique stop in his city, today's Massy TGV station . The decision to build the station by the authorities of the French central state in 1986 marked the starting point for Germon for further construction projects in his city. One of the realized projects is an opera house.

He has been sharply criticized by political opponents and journalists since the 1990s because of the city's construction projects and spending policy, which were described as "pharaonic". Of the 170 million French francs to build the TGV station, the city of 40,000 had to bear 52 (almost 8 million euros). The opera house built by the city alone cost 190 million francs (29 million euros); the Court of Auditors, Cour des Comptes, complained that the costs were too high.

After 21 years as mayor, Germon was surprisingly voted out of office in 1995. According to his successor in office Vincent Delahaye ( UDF ), the city's debts after the change of power in 1995 amounted to over 350 million francs (53 million euros), plus 73 million francs (11 million euros) in liabilities.

Because of his involvement in the party financing affair Affaire Sagès of the socialist party from the 1980s, Germon was sentenced in September 2000 to one year probation for granting advantages (Trafic d'influence) .
