The Kurmark Panzergrenadier Division was a half-armored unit of the German Wehrmacht during World War II . It was set up in March 1945 to stop the Soviet offensive on the Reich capital Berlin . The division was named after the Kurmark region in Brandenburg . Nevertheless, the battle for Berlin took place from mid-April to early May 1945 .

Division history

Lineup

The division was set up in Frankfurt an der Oder by order of January 31, 1945 from the combat group Langkeit and parts replacement Panzergrenadier Brigade Greater Germany . It was nothing more than a completely understaffed unit that was thrown into battle to at least temporarily hold back the Soviet advance into the German heartland. The division's strength never exceeded 4,350 men.

Combat missions

As part of the 9th Army, the division was subordinate to the Vistula Army Group and was first deployed in early February near Frankfurt an der Oder .

At the end of March the division, which had meanwhile been severely battered, was detached from the front and then filled with parts from other units. In mid-April, the division continued to work at the front. Along with other units of the Wehrmacht and the Waffen SS of the 9th Army, it was enclosed in the Halbe pocket southeast of Berlin . Remnants of the Kurmark Panzer Grenadier Division managed to break out to Jerichow on the Elbe , where they capitulated to the American troops in May 1945.
