The 20th Infantry Division and later the 20th Panzer Grenadier Division was a major unit of the army of the German Wehrmacht .
Division history
The 20th Infantry Division (ID) was set up in Hamburg on October 1, 1934 under the code name Reichswehrdienststelle Hamburg. The infantry regiments (IR) were formed from the 6th IR of the 2nd Reichswehr Division. The motorization of the division took place at the end of 1937. In October 1938 she took part in the Association of the XVI. Army Corps participated in the occupation of the Sudetenland .
The beginning of the war for the division was the attack on Poland . In 1941 she was involved in the capture of Brest-Litovsk . From June 22 to July 10, 1941, she took part in operations in Białystok and Minsk . In July 1941 she was sent to the northern section of the Eastern Front, where she fought Soviet units on the Daugava in the direction of Vitebsk . From July 11 to August 18, 1941, she fought in the Battle of Smolensk . Then she was subordinated to Army Group North. During the advance on Leningrad operated the 20th ID (mot) south of Lake Ladoga and should the Soviet bridgeheads of Annenskoje and Lobanov eliminate and eventually Schlüsselburg taking. From September 1941 to July 1942 the division was in action in the Chudowo area at the Volkhov position. In the winter of 1941/42 she fought at Tikhvin .
In July 1943 it was renamed the 20th Panzer Grenadier Division . In 1943, the 20th PGD fought against the advancing Red Army in Kiev and on the Dnieper . In the spring of 1944 the division was enclosed in the so-called Hube-Kessel near Kamenez-Podolsk , but was able to free itself again and retreated towards Lemberg and Kamionka on the Bug . In 1945 the 20th PGD was involved in the battles around the Vistula and backed away in the direction of Lausitzer Neisse , Stettin and Oderbruch . Later she took part in the battles for Berlin and Potsdam . On May 5, 1945, she capitulated to the US Army in Tangermünde .
