Joachim Ziegler (born October 18, 1904 in Hanau , † May 2, 1945 in Berlin ) was SS Brigade Leader and Major General of the Waffen SS and most recently commander of the 11th SS Volunteer Panzer Grenadier Division "Nordland" .

Life

Joachim Ziegler was born in 1904 as the son of a police officer. He joined the Reichswehr in 1923 . During the Spanish Civil War he was awarded the Spanish Cross as a member of the Condor Legion .

At the beginning of the Second World War he was commanded as a captain of the Wehrmacht to adjutant of the 3rd Panzer Brigade of the 3rd Panzer Division . On June 1, 1943, he was commanded by the Wehrmacht to the Waffen-SS and served from June 20, 1943 as Chief of the General Staff of the III. Germanic SS Panzer Corps . On November 9, 1943, he was given permission to wear the uniform of an SS Oberführer for the duration of his command in the Waffen SS . As the successor of the fallen SS-Gruppenführer and Lieutenant General of the Waffen-SS Fritz von Scholz , he took over the 11th SS Volunteer Panzer Grenadier Division "Nordland" and on August 1, 1944, was completely taken over as an SS Brigade Leader in the Waffen-SS. Because of his unauthorized management style, he was replaced as division commander on April 25, 1945.

Joachim Ziegler died on May 2, 1945 in the breakout fighting from Berlin in the area of ​​the Humboldthaines . His grave is in the old cemetery in Darmstadt .
