Papa Bouba Diop (born January 28, 1978 in Dakar , † November 29, 2020 in Paris ) was a Senegalese football player .
Career
Papa Bouba Diop preferred to play in the position of a central midfielder, but could also be used in the position in front of the defense. Due to his stature and height of 1.94 meters, the strong box-to-box midfielder was a very unpleasant opponent. During his time at Fulham he was referred to as the “last jewel in the crown”. From the 2007/08 season Diop played for Portsmouth FC . In 2008 he won the FA Cup with Portsmouth .
For the 2010/11 season he moved to AEK Athens on a free transfer . In mid-2011 AEK released the center forward as a free agent and West Ham United was able to sign him on August 31, 2011 for a year (with an option for a further 12 months) for 250,000 euros. However, this option was not drawn and so he moved to Birmingham City, for which he however only completed two league games.
National team
Diop was appointed to the Senegalese national football team for the first time in 1999 , but did not play his first international match until 2001. He was part of the team for the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea , where he drew attention when he scored the 1-0 winner in the opening game against France . He scored three goals in five tournament matches and eleven goals in a total of 63 international matches.
Illness and death
Diop died in November 2020 at the age of 42 from complications from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
