The butterfly reaches a wingspan of 40 to 55 mm. The male's wings are black with large bruises. The female, on the other hand, has brown wings with white dots on the edges.

Papilio phorbanta lives in the forests of Réunion. The caterpillars feed on diamond plants (Rutaceae), which also include citrus plants. The moths prefer to fly at an altitude of 300 to 1200 meters, but they have sometimes been found between 0 and 1400 meters. The four centimeter long green to yellow-green caterpillar can usually be found on citrus trees to which they have obviously adapted. The larva is about 3 cm long.

The eggs are often parasitized by Trichogrammatidae or Sceleonidae , the larvae by Carcelia evoluans .

Papilio phorbanta is on the red list of threatened animal species (VU - Vulnerable) and has been legally protected by the French government since 1979, so it cannot be caught, sold or transported.
