The jumping competitions of the VIII Winter Olympics in 1960 were held on the Papoose Peak Jumps in Squaw Valley , California .

history

There is little reliable information about this ski jumping complex. Since the entire ski area did not yet exist when the Olympic competition was in 1955, it can be assumed that the ski jumps were also built between 1955 and 1960. They were apparently designed by the Oberstdorf architect Heini Klopfer .

Since there is still no evidence of international competitions on the hills, it can be assumed that they were shut down again soon afterwards and fell into disrepair.

Jump

The hill was 90 meters long. Further technical details are not known.

The 1960 Olympic champion was surprisingly Helmut Recknagel from the GDR . Recknagel started for the joint German team and surprised the jury so much that they apparently didn't even have a national flag at the award ceremony. The silver medal was won by Niilo Halonen from Finland, ahead of Otto Leodolter from Austria .

More jumps

There was still a K60 and a K40 ski jump at Papoose Peak, and they are also in ruins today.
