The Pope's Cross is a 40 meter high and 56 ton heavy steel cross in the Vienna Danube Park . It was built in 1983 on the occasion of a Holy Mass held by Pope John Paul II . He celebrated this together with around 350,000 believers during his visit to Austria on Katholikentag (September 12th) on the (later so-called) Papstwiese , an area of ​​around 20 hectares in the Danube Park.

After it was considered in 2010 to tear down the cross due to security deficiencies, there was an agreement in January 2011 between the city and the Archdiocese of Vienna to renovate the Pope's cross from 2011. The renovation began in September 2011, with the Pope's cross being completely removed. The renovation work was completed in December 2011. The Association Religion is Private Matters criticized the renovation and tried to prevent the rebuilding of the cross.

The Pope's Cross was consecrated anew on June 16, 2012 by Cardinal Christoph Schönborn .
