The Papuan parrot finch ( Erythrura papuana ) is a species of the finch family . No subspecies are distinguished.
description
The Papuan parrot finch is very similar to the tri-colored parrot finch . It can only be distinguished from the latter by its larger body size and stronger beak. It was therefore long considered a subspecies of this fine finch species, until it was established that the two species sometimes occur in the same range.
The males have an indigo blue head, green body, red tail, and black beak. The females are mostly colored similarly to the males, but have a less intensely blue feathered head and the blue is less extensive. Young birds are much more dull in color than the adult birds.
Distribution area and way of life
The range of the Papua parrot madine are the mountains of New Guinea on the Vogelkop Peninsula, in the area of the Paniai lakes and on Mount Tafa, the Wharton Mountains and the Owen Stanley Mountains. In southeast New Guinea, the Tricolored Parrot and Papuan Parrot represent each other like a mosaic.
The habitat of the Papuan parrot finch are forest edges and clearings at altitudes between 800 and 2,000 meters above sea level. Nearly nothing is known about their way of life and reproduction from field observations. In the southeast of New Guinea, the breeding season appears to begin from the end of May.
attitude
The Papuan parrot finch was first introduced to Europe in 1969. The birds sold under this name are occasionally three-color parrot finches. According to the husbandry reports, the Papuan parrot is calmer and more trusting than the three-color parrot.
