Drawing from the first description

description

The fish are a maximum of 11 cm long and have a slender, elongated body with a brownish base color, females rather light brown, males darker and more bronze-colored. Three longitudinal stripes run along the head and sides of the body, which in the males have an intense blue sheen, in the females are more pale blue. The dorsal fin is yellowish with blue spots, the other fins are dark. All fins are lined with blue. The upper and lower edges of the caudal fin are elongated into short appendages that the females lack. The dorsal and anal fins, as well as the pelvic fins, are pointed in the males and rounded in the females. The mouth can be pushed forward in a tubular shape.

Way of life

Paracyprichromis nigripinnis lives in large flocks of several hundred individual animals, relatively true to their location, at depths of more than 20 meters in front of vertically sloping cliffs. The fish feed primarily on zooplankton , especially copepods , and planktonic algae. They are mouthbrooders and the reproductive, 8 to 10 cm long females keep the large, yolk-rich eggs, larvae and juvenile fish in their mouths until the latter swim freely with a length of up to 1.8 cm. More than 4 weeks pass between egg laying and free swimming. After swimming free, the young fish first live in caves and crevices in the rocks. As they get bigger, they gradually leave their hiding places to join the schools of adult fish.
