Way of life

The hoverflies can be seen from May to September. They prefer poor grassland biotopes as a habitat . The species trains 3–4 generations a year. It hibernates as a pupa in the ground. The first generation adults appear at the end of April / beginning of May . The larvae feed on various tubular aphids , including the soybean aphid ( Aphis glycines ), Melanaphis sacchari , Rhopalosiphum maidis , Rhopalosiphum padi and Lipaphis erysimi . The adult flies feed on nectar and honeydew.
