Karoumes ( Greek Παραλία Καρούμες Paralia Karoumes ) is a beach in the east of the Greek island of Crete . It is located on the bay of Karoubes ( Όρμος Καρούμπες ) of the Levantine Sea and belongs to the local community Palekastro ( Παλαίκαστρο ) of the municipality of Sitia ( Σητεία ).

Location and description

Karoumes is located 2.6 kilometers east of Chochlakies ( Χοχλακιές ), part of the local community Palekastro, and 5.2 kilometers north of Kato Zakros ( Κάτω Ζάκρος ) on the east coast of Crete. The beach is bordered on both sides by limestone cliffs. Since Karoumes can only be reached by sea, via coastal paths or through the natural Chochlakies Gorge , it is considered the most remote beach in Eastern Crete. About 2.5 kilometers north begins on the beaches of Skinias ( Παραλίες του Σκινιά the peninsula) Plaka ( Πλάκα ).

North side of the beach

Behind the beach of Karoumes a 500 × 400-meter level, to the north in the mountains of extending Simodi ( Σιμόδι ) and south into the mountains of Traostalos ( Τραόσταλος passes). To the west it is bordered by the entrance to the Chochlakies Gorge. Due to the low rainfall and the lack of springs in the coastal mountains, the plain is very dry and relies on seasonal irrigation by the river Flegas ( Φλέγας Ποταμός ), which flows out of the gorge from the direction of Chochlakies. On the way through the plain you pass some small wells. To the west above the plain there are traces of settlement from the Minoan as well as the historical period on the slopes of the 43 meter high Kastellas ( Καστέλλας ) .

The beach Karoumes has a length of about 280 meters, its maximum width is 50 meters. In the middle and in the north behind the beach there are some tall tamarisk trees that owe their growth to the mouth of the Flegas . In the spring, brackish ponds form in the mouth of the river . Due to its eastern orientation, the bay is protected from the strong north winds of the Meltemi . The pebble beach quickly deepens in the clear water. Karoumes should have the same water quality as the beach of Kato Zakros in the south, which was designated as bathing water in 1996. The water quality there, which has been regularly checked since 2010 in accordance with the EU Bathing Water Directive , has always been rated excellent since 2012 .

Access

Chochlakies Gorge

The shortest access to the beach is via Geo-Route 13 through the Chochlakies Gorge, which also forms part of the E4 European long-distance hiking trail . There is an unpaved parking lot at the starting point east of the village of Chochlakies. The path through the gorge is 3.8 kilometers long and leads partly alongside and partly through the bed of the Flegas River . The time required for the hike is indicated at the car park as 1 hour and 20 minutes. If you walk fast, the beach can be reached in 45 minutes.
