Paraliparis is a species-rich genus from the fish family of the bellies (Liparidae). Paraliparis species live in cool and temperate seas, especially in the northern and southern Atlantic and Pacific, in the southeast Indian Ocean near Australia, and in the Southern Ocean.

features

Paraliparis species reach body lengths of 5 to 40 cm. The pelvic fins typical of the disc bellies and giving them their name are missing. There is only one nostril on each side of the head. A pseudobranch ("eye gill gland") is missing. The head is without barbels or other skin excesses. The pectoral fins may or may not be divided into two praises. If present, the lower one is never made up of a single filament. In rare cases, abdominal ribs are present. The hypuralia have grown together with the posterior part of the vertebral bodies and are undivided. Epuralia, which are elongated, free-standing bones in the caudal fin skeleton, may be present or absent.
