The parametrium , also called the parametria in medical parlance , is an anatomical term that describes the pelvic connective tissue in front of the cervix to the urinary bladder and on both sides to the lateral pelvic wall. At the top it is bounded by the peritoneum , more precisely by a tent-roof-like thickening of the peritoneum called the ligamentum latum uteri , and at the bottom by the pelvic floor muscles. Eight ligaments run through the tissue that stabilize the position of the uterus: the cardinal ligament ( eponym : Mackenrodt ligament) with the arteria and vena uterina on both sides, the vesicouterinum ligament on both sides to the urinary bladder and the teres uteri ligament to the inguinal canal , behind on both sides the ligamentum sacrouterinum to the sacrum .

For the prognosis of cervical cancer it is important to assess whether the tumor has reached or exceeded the parametrium.

In animal anatomy, the connective tissue , smooth muscles , blood vessels and nerves between the two leaves of the ligamentum latum uteri are called the parametrium.
