Paras Nath Prasad

Paras Nath Prasad (born June 4, 1946 in Bihar ) is an Indian chemist.

Prasad studied chemistry at Bihar University with a bachelor's degree in 1964 and a master's degree in 1966 (each receiving the gold medal of the university), was a lecturer at Bhagalpur University in India in 1967 and received his doctorate in chemistry from Philadelphia University in 1971 . He was a post-graduate student at the University of Michigan . In 1974 he became an assistant professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo with a full professorship from 1982. In addition to chemistry, he also has professorships in physics, electrical engineering and medicine. He has been Distinguished Professor there since 1997 and he is Samuel P. Capen Professor and Executive Director of the multidisciplinary Institute for Lasers, Photonics and Biophotonics .

He deals with laser chemistry (chemical investigations with laser spectroscopy) and solid-state chemistry. Prasad investigated, among other things, time-resolved redistribution of vibrational energy in molecules, phonon-supported spectral diffusion in disordered solids, optical double resonance of molecular solids at low temperatures in the picosecond range, dynamics of chemical conversions in organic solids and thin films from a molecular layer, as well as with design, ultrastructure and dynamics of thin films of electroactive polymers. He deals with nanosciences (nanophotonics, nanomedicine) and published a monograph on biophotonics and is considered a pioneer in this field.

In 2016 he received the gold medal of the SPIE, in 1999 the Schoelkopf Award of the Western New York Section of the ACS, the Morley Medal of the ACS, the Western New York Health Care Industries Technology / Discovery Award and in 2018 the Peter Debye Award . He was a Sloan Fellow from 1977 to 1981 and a Guggenheim Fellow in 1997. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (1995) and the Optical Society of America (1994). In 2005 he was voted one of the Scientific American Top 50 Scientists (Science and Technology Leaders in the World).

He organized six International Conferences on Frontiers of Polymers and Advanced Materials (first in India in 1991). He has authored and co-authored over 700 publications and holds several patents. He is, among other things, honorary doctorates from Aix-Marseille and the Royal Technical University in Stockholm.
