Ponciano Leiva Madrid (* 1821 ; † 1896 ) was President of Honduras from January 13, 1874 to June 8, 1876 and from November 30, 1891 to August 7, 1893 .

Ponciano Leiva was a general and a member of the Partidio Conservador .

First term

On November 1, 1873, Justo Rufino Barrios Auyón from Guatemala and Santiago González Portillo from El Salvador met at the Volcán Chingo and agreed a Tratado de Chingo with which they agreed to install Ponciano Leiva as the new president in Honduras.

Justo Rufino Barrios Auyón from Guatemala and Santiago González Portillo from El Salvador had General Ponciano Leiva set up a counter-government in the Ciudad de Choluteca on November 23, 1873. From here he started a campaign to overthrow Carlos Céleo Arias López . Leiva had Ciudad de Comayagua occupied by the Three Kings in 1874 and Arias deposed, who surrendered on January 13, 1874 and was imprisoned in the Colegio Tridentino from January 13 to May 1, 1874. A court martial sentenced Arias to five years' exile and with an escort he was deported to El Salvador.

In 1876 Ponciano Leiva resigned under pressure from José María Reina Barrios , President of Guatemala. Then his foreign minister and political foster child Marco Aurelio Soto became President of Honduras until Soto became independent and Reina Barrios' uncle, Justo Rufino Barrios Auyón , who had meanwhile become President of Guatemala, urged him into exile. In the following government under Luis Bográn Barahona , Leiva was Minister of War.

Honduras had a regular government army of 500 soldiers and the militia had 20,000 militiamen. When Bográn fell ill, he had a vote.

Second term

On November 10, 1891 was elected. One candidate was Policarpo Bonilla .

The resignation in 1893 in favor of Domingo Vázquez was based on threats.
