Domingo Vásquez Toruño

Domingo Vásquez Toruño (born August 3, 1846 in Tegucigalpa , † December 9, 1909 Tegucigalpa) was President of Honduras from August 7, 1893 to February 22, 1894 .

Life

His parents were Martina Toruño and Manuel Emigdio Vásquez Alcántara. On February 1, 1862, he graduated with a degree in philosophy . In 1865 he received his doctorate on civil law. In 1868 he passed the bar exam at the Universidad de Honduras .

In 1871 as a captain, he took part in the hostilities against President José María Medina .

During the uprising of Ponciano Leiva (Partido Conservador de Honduras) against the government of José María Medina in 1876, he commanded the defense of Tegucigalpa. In 1877 he was sent to the government of Peru as a plenipotentiary, where he represented Honduras at the Congreso Internacional de Juristas in Lima. He visited some countries in South America, the USA and various countries in Europe. During the government of General Luis Bográn Barahona (1883-1891) he stayed abroad. When Ponciano Leiva took office on November 30, 1891, he returned to Honduras and was appointed Commander-in-Chief of Tegucigalpa in 1894. Under the government of Rosendo Agüero Ariza (February 9 to April 18, 1893) he was appointed Minister of Government.

Presidency

From April 18, 1893 Domingo Vásquez was President of Honduras. He founded the departments of Cortés and Valle . He called for elections to legitimize his remaining in office. Parliament appointed him President from 1894 to 1898 by Decree No. 26 on September 14, 1893.

Revolution of 1894

Opposition from the Partido Liberal de Honduras , led by Policarpo Bonilla from Nicaragua , operated against his government. Domingo Vásquez received power to wage war from parliament and Vásquez attacked Nicaragua because the local government José Santos Zelaya supported his opposition to Policarpo Bonilla, Manuel Bonilla , Miguel R. Dávila and Miguel Oquelí Bustillo . The army of Honduras was defeated in Choluteca, Tegucigalpa besieged and the Domingo Vásquez government overthrown. The united troops of the Partido Liberal from Honduras and Nicaragua marched into Tegucigalpa on February 22, 1894. The government cabinet headed by Rosendo Aguero handed over the surrender to Policarpo Bonilla.

exile

From June to September 5, 1894, Váquez went on a fundraising tour of New Orleans, New York for a new government in Honduras. He then traveled back to Costa Rica to see his friend President Rafaes Iglesias I Castro.

After resigning as president, he spent a time in El Salvador in Europe and Asia. In 1908 he visited the USA. In 1909 he returned to Honduras.
