Park Jeong-dae (* 1965 in Chŏngsŏn , Kangwŏn-do ) is a South Korean poet .

Life

Park Jeong-dae was born in Chŏngsŏn , Kangwŏn-do in 1965 . One of his peculiarities is that he is always dressed informally. Even at award ceremonies, he always appears in jeans and a leather jacket, with a baseball cap on his head. An episode of his childhood explains this dress code: On his first day in elementary school, he appeared dressed up in a suit that his mother had bought especially for him, and was mocked by his classmates for it. This experience not only turned Park away from formal clothing, but also gave him a "rebellious character and a need to live freely".

He first considered a career as a writer at the age of eight when a geomancer , consulted to determine a suitable site for the grave of Park's late father, predicted that an author would emerge from the family. In his youth he began his literary training by reading diligently and writing whenever the opportunity arose. In school he was awarded several prizes for his works and in high school he founded a literature group called Wille (심지).

Park began studying Korean Literature at Korea University in 1984 and fell in love for the first time. The memories of his first love can be found continuously as a motif in his works and also serve as a source for his imagination. He took two semesters off to take care of his grandmother who had leukemia. During this time he wrote a number of short stories and poems. After her death, he did his military service and then continued his studies. He made his literary debut in 1990 when he published six poems. Since then he has published three volumes of poetry.
