Since 1911 the former villa of the industrialist Hans Freiherr von Verschuer in Wolfach has served as a rest home for those who are convalescent , those in need of rest and relaxation . In 1913 the first patients from the Reich Insurance Company for employees in Berlin came to Wolfach. From 1914 to 1915 the property was available to the Red Cross as a hospital. After the war, the convalescent home continued to be occupied by the Reichsversicherungsanstalt, although until 1945 only female members of the Reichsversicherungsanstalt were accepted. After the French occupation, the building was returned to the owner at the time in 1951. A year later, the neurologist Fritz Barlen (1894–1960) opened the sanatorium for Parkinson's patients . In July 1953 he received the concession to convert the sanatorium into a private clinic for Parkinson's patients. After Barlen's death, Eduard Wohlauf (1916–1998) took over the management of the sanatorium, which was moved to Klinik Dr. Wohlauf was renamed. Under his leadership, the clinic specialized in the treatment of multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's patients. With the inclusion of the house in the requirement plan of the state of Baden-Württemberg in 1989 as a house of standard care level 2, an exclusive specialization in the treatment of Parkinson's disease and related disorders took place. In 1990 Gerd Fuchs, a specialist in neurology and psychiatry, succeeded Wohlauf and became the medical director of the clinic. Two years later the hospital was renamed Parkinson-Klinik Wolfach . The managing partners Angela and Wolfgang Stegelitz renovated the old building and built the guest house at the park in 1996 . In 2003 the hospital building was expanded to include the so-called bed house. As a result, the usable area of the clinic was increased from 1700 to 3200 square meters while the bed capacity remained the same. In 2013 Heiko Stegelitz took over the management of the clinic, in the same year Wolfgang Jost succeeded Gerd Fuchs as chief physician, at the same time this marked the beginning of a close cooperation with the Freiburg University Medical Center . At the end of 2014, Heiko Stegelitz took over the Parkinson Clinic as the sole shareholder and owner. The clinic has been called Parkinson-Klinik Ortenau since 2016 .
