General election of the Bahamas 2017
The 2017 general election in the Bahamas took place on May 10, 2017.
background
During the election campaign, the Free National Movement (FNM), led by Hubert Minnis, fought for a change of government and promised to encourage the Bahamas to take responsibility for its economy. The Progressive Liberal Party's (PLP) campaign was overshadowed by corruption scandals and the delayed opening of a $ 4.2 billion mega-resort owned by a foreign company called Baha Mar , the opening of which had to be postponed three times. The agreement signed in April 2017 between the PLP government and the purchaser of the resort provides for a further financial contribution from the government, debt relief and the issuing of work permits for foreign workers.
Election result
The FNM ousted former Prime Minister Perry Christie and his PLP from power and won 35 of the 39 seats in parliament. Previously, the Boundaries Commission, which sets the number and boundaries of electoral districts, increased the number of seats from 38 to 39 in December 2016. The previous Prime Minister lost his seat, which he had held since 1977. On May 11, 2017, Hubert Minnis was sworn in as the new Prime Minister by the Governor General Marguerite Pindling .
