Dame Marguerite Pindling GCMG (born June 26, 1932 as Marguerite McKenzie in Long Bay Cays , South Andros , Andros , Bahamas ) is a Bahamas politician of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), who was Governor General of the Bahamas from 2014 to 2019 . She was married to the politician Lynden O. Pindling from 1956 until his death in 2000 , who was Prime Minister of the Bahamas between 1967 and 1992 .

Life

Marguerite McKenzie, who came from a humble background, moved with a sister to Nassau in 1946 , where she attended Western Senior School . After completing school, she worked for the well-known photographer Stanley Toogood and later for Colyn Rees, before she met Lynden O. Pindling , a lawyer trained in London . After a year-long engagement, she married Pindling on May 5, 1956, who was elected to the House of Assembly for the first time shortly afterwards and was a member of it until 1997. Lynden O. Pindling later became Prime Minister in 1967, before being Prime Minister of the Bahamas between 1973 and 1992 after the sovereignty of Great Britain. In the following years, Marguerite Pindling supported the political work of her husband, with whom she was married until his death on August 26, 2000. The marriage had four children.

She was also involved in numerous organizations, such as chairing the fundraising committee of the National Red Cross of the Bahamas and supporting the Hope Dale School and the Children's Emergency Hostel . For her merits, she was in 2007 by Queen Elizabeth II. To Dame Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (DCMG) appointed. During the absence of Governor General Arthur Foulkes from 2010 to 2014, she temporarily acted as Deputy Governor General.

On July 8, 2014, Marguerite Pindling succeeded Arthur Foulkes as Governor General of the Bahamas, making her the second woman to hold this office after Ivy Dumont .
